Using flock glue: how to apply flock adhesive perfectly

What is flock glue?

Flock glue is the foundation of every successful flocking project. It is a special adhesive onto which you apply the flock fibres: the fibres bond upright in the still-wet glue layer and form the characteristic, velvety-soft finish. The glue largely determines your end result – too little or unevenly applied, and the fibres will not bond everywhere, resulting in bare patches or a grainy surface.

Which flock glue should you choose?

For almost all DIY and hobby projects, a water-based adhesive is the right choice. Keep these points in mind when choosing:

• Surface – our glue bonds to wood, plastic, MDF, cardboard, metal and more. Unsure about a specific surface (for example, a highly grease-repellent plastic)? Get in touch and we will help you out.
• Quantity – decide in advance how much area you are going to flock (see the calculation guide below).
• Colour – by default the glue is neutral. Want the glue layer to match the colour of your flock (prevents show-through with bright or light colours)? Then mix in some flocking pigment.

How much flock glue do you need?

One 250-gram tin of flock glue is matched to about 250 grams of flock fibres and covers around 2.5 m². Handy when planning your project:

• Small detail work (e.g. a sunglasses holder or small box): one tin is more than enough.
• An average car dashboard: count on ±2 m² – one tin is usually sufficient.
• Larger or multiple parts: scale up with extra tins or choose a larger FlockBox size, in which glue and fibres are already matched to each other.

Applying flock glue: step by step

1. Prepare – clean the surface thoroughly, make it grease-free and dry. Lightly sand glossy surfaces for better adhesion and mask off areas you do not want to flock.
2. Apply the glue – use a brush to apply an even, slightly thicker layer of flock glue. Make sure the entire area to be flocked is covered, without puddles or dry edges.
3. Apply the flock – within the working time (±10–15 minutes, while the glue is wet) apply the fibres directly with a flocking applicator. Be generous and work from multiple angles; collect excess fibres to reuse.
4. Let it dry and finish – first let everything dry and fully cure. Then brush or vacuum away the loose fibres for a clean, even result.

Drying time and curing

When flocking, patience matters more than speed. Stick to these guideline times:

A heat source can speed up drying, but we advise against it: drying too fast often comes at the expense of adhesion. Only consider it if time really matters, and then keep the heat at a safe distance.

On which surfaces does flock glue work?

Our water-based flock glue bonds to most materials, including:

• Wood and MDF
• Plastic and most composites
• Cardboard and paper
• Metal (well degreased)
• Painted and varnished surfaces (light sanding recommended)

For highly porous or highly repellent surfaces, we are happy to advise on pre-treatment.

Common mistakes with flock glue

• Layer too thin – insufficient glue means insufficient adhesion and bare patches. Better to apply a little more generously.
• Waiting too long – apply the flock while the glue is still wet; a dried-out layer no longer grabs the fibres.
• Dirty or greasy surface – dust and grease disrupt adhesion. Always clean thoroughly first.
• Brushing off too early – let the glue dry fully first; otherwise you pull fibres loose.
• Too much water when cleaning after curing – because the glue is water-based, a lot of water can damage the layer. Only use a lightly damp cloth.

Safety and storage

Wear gloves when using the glue and work in a well-ventilated space. Store the glue closed, at room temperature and out of reach of children. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately. Keep any leftover glue and fibres well stored: this way you can later touch up any damage with exactly the same colour.

Can I store the glue after opening?

Yes, provided it is well sealed and stored at room temperature. Before reusing, check that the glue is still easy to work with.
