Flock applicator: how it works and when to use it
What is a flock applicator?
A flock applicator is a hand-held tool with which you apply flock fibres evenly onto a glue-covered surface. It is the most accessible way to flock: you do not need an expensive machine and can start right away. That makes the applicator ideal for hobbyists, detail work and small to medium-sized projects.
The flocking applicator from DutchFlock consists of two tubes that slide over each other. The outer tube has a fine grid (sieve) through which the fibres come out when you move the applicator.
How does a flock applicator work? Step by step
- Fill the inner tube about halfway with flock fibres in the colour of your choice. Not too full – the fibres need room to move freely.
- Slide the outer tube (with the grid) back over it.
- Hold the grid side about 15–20 cm away from the object.
- Move the inner tube back and forth (or tap gently); the movement shoots the fibres evenly onto the wet glue.
- Work in light, flowing passes and from multiple angles for full, even coverage without bare patches.
Be generous with the fibres. Whatever does not bond falls off and you collect it (for example over a tray or paper) to reuse.
Tips for the best result
- Timing – apply the flock while the glue is still wet (±10–15 minutes working time).
- Overlap – on larger areas, work in sections with slight overlap to avoid visible lines.
- Detail work – for corners and edges you can also touch up the fibres by hand or with a fine brush.
- Collecting – work over a clean tray so you can neatly reuse excess fibres.
Applicator or flocking machine?
A hand-held applicator is perfect for small to medium-sized projects, detail work and occasional use. If you regularly flock larger surfaces, a flocking machine can save time: it charges the fibres electrostatically, so they land faster, straighter and more evenly on the object. Changing colour: how to clean the applicator
Want to use a different colour? Then first clean the inside of both tubes thoroughly with a vacuum hose or an anti-static cloth. This prevents fibres of different colours from mixing and your new colour from getting contaminated.
Maintenance
Keep the applicator dry and dust-free. Did glue get on the grid? Remove it carefully while it has not yet cured, so the openings stay clear.
